    Altec 802D 16 ohms

Can you convert an Altec 802D 16 ohms to 8 ohms by just replacing the diapraghm?

    regards,

I believe you can, but not sure of the part number.
I'm sure someone with that knowledge here will chime in.
    Cheers,
    John

Yes you can, the impedance of a driver is determined by the resistance in the voice coil.As the voice coil is part of the diaghram a simple change of diaghram will do.You may want to have the driver remagnetized as well if it hasn't been done yet.

Why is it you want to swap diaphragms?
Nothing like a great big pair of speakers to make your day.

Thanks again Altec Best, and John. You been so helpful to me.

Cal, I want to try it for myself how does it sound if I changed its Z to match a 416-8A.

    Re: Altec 802D 16 ohms

The new style 8 ohm 1" diaphragm is a 34647. The older style also did come with this part number too.

You probably have 34852s or 20275s installed at 16 ohm?

If you want original format ones, the 8 ohm was a 21597.

Keep in mind that if you do have an original part in your 802D, then it will have the older spade connectors, the new diaphragms have slide on ones. It means new lead wires.

Why can I rattle all of this off????

    Just done a mega swap around of 8 604Es, 4 802Gs and 2 902A diaphragms....

Talk about nervous concentration, especially when some of the diaphragms were 20275s, original 604 16 ohm, and 23744s, the magic 'light' 1" 8 ohms.
